Manjung or “Dinding” as it was formerly known, is a district in the south-western part of the state of Perak, Malaysia, well known for its Pangkor Island, a major tourist attraction in Perak. It also boasts the Naval Base and dockyard of the Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) in Lumut besides the Lumut Port. The ever-increasing population has promoted to the intense development of this district, once part of the British Straits Settlements Colony. The overflow demanded new residential and commercial infrastructure to be built resulting in the birth of Bandar Seri Manjung, the district’s principal urban centre. Seri Manjung is a well-planned township. It houses government administrative complexes such as the Municipal Council Office, National Registration Office, Department Of Public Works Office, Multi-speciality Hospital and Immigration Office. The town also has a sports centre and shopping malls.
Although agriculture leads the economic sector, Manjung District is the second most rapid growing district in Perak within the commercial sector after Kinta. Most of the businesses and industries are located along the road linking Sitiawan, Seri Manjung, Lumut and Ayer Tawar. There are also industrial and commercial activities in the neighbouring smaller towns. This district has been a location of choice for many leading national and multinational organizations to set up their business operations which has elevated the socio-economic status of this town. Among them are Vale, a global mining company with headquarters in Brazil who are leaders in the production of iron ore and the largest producer of nickel. Vale operates an iron ore distribution centre in the shores of Teluk Rubiah, Lumut, called the Teluk Rubiah Maritime Terminal (TRMT), an investment of US$ 1.37 billion which serves as a gateway connecting core mines in Brazil to the consumer markets in Asia.
